Rammellzee
Yesterday we learned that Rammellzee had unfortunately passed away. His notoriety mostly coming from the early 80’s collaborative release with K-Rob called Beat Bop, they offered a 10 minute outer space Hip Hop tune that has never been topped. The 12 inch release of Beat Bop also featured original artwork from another NYC Downtown mainstay, Jean-Michel Basquiat. He is also credited for...

Freedom Ain't Free
One of the newest additions to Austin’s South Congress shopping mecca, Stag, is about to have their first Flea Market this coming Friday that looks to be the start of a great thing. I try to shop while out of town, but Stag definitely gets my money locally. See you there!

Konika C35 EF
I bought this camera yesterday for quite a steal. I think it should still work fine. This might come with me to Japan. Pictures soon. You must learn.

LinnDrum
When I first heard the LinnDrum I immediately fell in love with its unique sound. The creator of said drum machine, Roger Linn, has had his hands in some of your favorite beat machines including some of the early Akai models. Arthur Russell used this religiously, which might be one of the reasons I am so in love with it. You must learn.

Olympus Pen Series History
When I started getting into photography the Pen series stood out from a design stand point alone. I can safely say that I am in love with every model of the series, with their timeless looks and historical significance. Shown above is the Olympus Pen F from the early 1960s. Here is a history of the beautiful series, you must learn

Giant Robot issue #65
Recommended Reading / Pop Culture Giant Robot 65 has hit the shelves in Austin finally and needless to say it is a great issue. Also, if you take a skim across the pages to the music reviews they reviewed Kamchruoch!!! Big shout out and thank you to Martin Wong for doing that! Kamchruoch is my latest mixtape with fellow South East Asian philanthropist Mike 2600. The mix consists of mostly...

Kele Okereke - The Boxer
Recommended Listening / New Release Its finally here! I had the pleasure to sit in on the recording / brainstorming sessions of almost this entire album. Last Fall when I was working an internship with XXXchange of Spank Rock / Fully Fitted fame, Kele was also coming over to the studio to work on what is now The Boxer. The album should be available to the world today whether it be via iTunes...

Rapha - NYC
Cycling News. Grabbing this directly from Prolly, which I don’t normally do, but Rapha has treated me well. Rapha will be opening a brick & mortar July 1st on Bowery in New York City. I love everyone I have met from Rapha and I love their clothes even more! They keep the cyclist that wants to look good when they get to their destination in mind when creating their pieces. You must...

Herbie Hancock - The Imagine Project
Recommended Watching. I have been playing Herbie’s Head Hunters on repeat as of late, and coincidentally a new studio project from the man himself just got released. The Imagine Project is not simply a new studio album, but a collaboration with some of the world’s greatest musicians and Pink (yeah, that Pink). India Arie, Seal, Konono no 1, Ravi + Ananda Shankar, + many more. I...

Nintendo 3DS
Tech / Gadget Whoa! Nintendo hinted towards the 3DS just a few months back, but today still came with major surprises as they not only announced the device, but had working models on hand. Engadget has a great write up on it + video. You obviously won’t get the 3D effect via the video, but you can see how it works slightly. You must learn

Dara Puspita 1966 - 1968
Recommended Listening. Sublime Frequencies hits it out of the ballpark once again. Dara Puspita (Flower Girls) was Indonesia’s most popular all female garage rock group throughout the 1960’s into the early 70’s.  This is definitely going on my end of the year list & I am keeping every finger and toe crossed that they issue this on vinyl even though the extensive liner...

Congotronics Vinyl Box Set
Recommended Listening / Record Obsession The always amazing Konono no 1 recently released their newest album & 5th in the Congotronics series, Assume Crash Position. I stopped into the local record store to give it a listen & was impressed with how much more musical it was than previous releases. They have managed to cage their wildly amped Kalimbas & have crafted gorgeous textural...

Pearl Harbor >>> Puro Instinct
Recommended Listening. Glad I ventured over to Pearl Harbor’s website today. They just digitally released a new EP via Bandcamp that will soon be on vinyl in July from Gloriette Records. The sound is kind of a departure from their super dreamy world they created on their Mexican Summer debut, and I am not not too sure if I am ready for change. Speaking of change, it seems they got some...

Matthew Herbert - Leipzig I slept on Matthew Herbert’s latest single and I regret doing so for so long. My friend Scotty formerly of Ubiquity Records hipped me to this the other day & it has been playing in the earbuds non stop. The video is great and I figured out what really does it for me is Mr. Herbert’s strut.

The Charizma Tee
Stones Throw Records has always been in what I consider the Genius Posse (ask me later). Charizma was little known to me when he was alive, but I soon learned of his greatness a few years later thanks to Los Angeles’ The Beat Junkies. On The World Famous Beat Junkies mixtape vol 1 mixed by Babu, he played Charizma’s & PB Wolf “My World Premier” …. I was...

Ubiquity 20th Anniversary Handmade Kalimbas
Elliot Bergman of Ann Arbor’s Afrobeatsters, Nomo, has hand crafted these beautiful Kalimbas. Not only are they hand crafted, gorgeous acoustic instruments, they have been specially fitted with a 1/4” output to amplify them ala Konono no 1. Bergman made a very limited run of these in an edition of 20 for the celebration of Ubiquity Records 20th anniversary! For more information + a...
