Those Shocking Shaking Days

image

Recommended Listening

Now-Again Records are the quintessential Funk music experts that record nerds dream of being & follow obsessively. Their taste is untouched with each release taking a different turn from the last.

The latest turn has led them to Indonesia in the 1970’s. The music of choice for the dodgy times was not unlike what was going on stateside. Psychedelic, Blues tinged, hard, funky Rock N Roll.

When I first reported on this a few months ago, label head Egon covered some nice ground on an NPR story he curates sporadically. Giving us a glimpse as to what we could expect for the compilation, I was already ahead of the curve on the some of the bands featured, but there were plenty others I had never heard a lick of.

If you have been following the Cambodian Rocks series, or love Sublime Frequencies just as much as I do, you should have a good idea of the wonder that was going on in Southeast Asia at the time.

The album is available in a CD version (pictured) or a nicely packaged 3 LP set (got that too!) that both come with an AMAZING book giving heavy details on the music with photos & liner notes.

Available at Turntable Lab.

The Intruders - Together

Recommended Listening / Sample Source

I am not one to hunt down samples, but I do love when I stumble upon great ones. My digging usually consists of buying things I really love whether it be rare or not, and this was a happy accident.

The Intruders have been noted as the group that kicked off the “Philly Sound” thanks to a little known (at the time) production team, Gamble & Huff. This song seeing a lot of great feedback introduced a new sound into Soul Music that went on to bring us many great artists. Basically, it was a hit.

Here is where it was fun for me.

I recently made a DJ edit pack of my favorite tunes from Ghostface Killah’s latest EP, Apollo Kids. The one tune a lot of DJs responded to well sampled this very record. Again, I am not a “beat digger” and had not cared to know where the sample came from, but it was more a fun coincidence picking up this unplayed copy for 2 dollars at Austin’s city wide garage sale and hearing this.

Dropout (Winter 2011)

Recommended Reading / Bike ‘Zine

With NAHBS having just passed in Austin, I am turning my attention to one of my other loves in life, BIKES!

Picked this up while I was in Austin over SXSW at Wheatsville Co-Op. Dropout is a local zine all about the Texas cycling life. I have been trying to collect them since the first issue, but may have missed the last one (ahem, holler for my address).

The Winter issue is a special issue dedicated to the women riders that often get neglected in the cycling community. Great write ups and stories all involving the better sex and I can’t stress enough about supporting your LOCAL cycling advocates.

Available for mail order and if you are in the Austin area, try and run by Wheatsville to grab one.

TV On The Radio - Will Do (XXX¢hange Dancehall Remix)

image

Recommended Download

I have had the fortune to play this for well over a month now before it’s release, and it has definitely turned so many heads whilst doing so. XXXchange of Win Win/Spank Rock/Fully Fitted fame has made a monster of a dancehall chune for us of your indie rock / space cadet darlings TV On The Radio. For this remix alone I believe must now call them TV Pon The Radio.

You can get this hot fiyah over at RCRDLBL for free.

You must learn.

Dark Entries Interviews Nagamatzu

image

Recommended Reading

Nagamatzu is a band I wish I would have known about years ago, but am glad to have finally caught wind. Their sound is pretty unique yet their influences are worn on their sleeves. If you like Joy Division, Cocteau Twins, and Dif Juz they will fit nicely into your collection.

The San Francisco based re-issue label, Dark Entries, released their album for the first time on vinyl late last year and it has been on my turntable ever since. Dark Entries caught up with Nagamatzu recently to give us a little more detail into what and how they came to be.

Turntable Lab Radio 001: Anika

image

Recommended Listening / DJ Mix

Turntable Lab Radio recently ducked out from the late night shadows of East Village Radio and is now it’s own free standing entity. They kicked off the new and refreshed series with the post punk goodness of Anika.

Anika is one of Stones Throw’s latest signings with her album seeing a release in late 2010. Geoff Barrow’s of Portishead produced the druggy dub record with perfection.

There is an official podcast that you can subscribe to in iTunes as well as a Tumblr page for Lab Radio, bonus Woodman footage of her set at the New York store. Follow them!

You must learn.

Recommended Listening / DJ Mix

Missed this one due to SXSW coming around the corner, but getting back on track. Mixpak always has the best exclusive mixes for their Mixpak FM series + podcast and they got the UK broken beat ambassador Seiji to bring it home for their latest.

Though his sound has recently taken a turn from his usual broken sound, it does not stray away too far from amazing percussive goodness. The last few EPs he has released have walked the line of his former self and the newer UK Funky sound that a lot of veteran producers have taken a liking to and seeing entire new fan bases along with it.

This mix is a good combination of all of the above with exclusive tracks, new chunes, and all around “cleaning the crib” fire.

To download the mix + get tracklist, you must learn.
