Houston’s latest collective, Bombon, is taking the Latin initiative and trying to push things a little further in the Houston area. While their members have been DJing Hip Hop, House, and Club in and around Texas for years, this new project takes cues from that of Austin’s Peligrosa, New York’s Dutty Artz and Que Bajo.
Latin tinged music seems to be the craze right now amongst the internet and I don’t blame anyone for not getting loose when some Salsa or Cumbia gets played and plenty of both are all over this mix. You can also expect original remixes, Cumbia Digital, and Moombahton rounding out the mix.

In the early 00’s San Antonio had a very special thing going on right in the heart of the beautiful historic downtown area. The Davenport was definitely a highlight in my memory that is still always called on. These were the days before Serato, but still in a weird transitional phase for a lot of DJs at the time. I am not trying to sound like an old head that hates everything new… though most new things are pretty wack. The fact is, the internet had not quite put it’s grasp around San Antonio’s neck. You could still have a quality night of quality music with no interruptions from your local knuckle head/becky.
JJ Lopez really molded The Davenport into a unique experience in San Antonio. From it’s early beginnings of one JBL speaker and NOTHING but Northern Soul & Hard Funk 45s to Disco/House/Hip Hop/Soul nights that all held their own. I am glad to have been apart of it, but wish I was there more often than I was. I did live 3 blocks away from there after all.
This mix was made on a Friday night in 2005. All Boogie/Disco, all vinyl, all live. I was already living in Austin at the time, but it was a special night and glad JJ came across the mix recently while making a move.

Writing about San Antonio is a hard thing to do without sounding condescending. I hope none of this gets taken so. There is a little write up I would like to do sooner than later about what it means to be from what I would call a “shadow” city, so hopefully that happens.

Very excited about this NYC screening of Downtown Calling. As some of you may recall, Austin housed the world premiere of the film maybe two years ago now at the Austin Film Festival. I was lucky enough to catch the flick and DJ the after party with director Shan Nicholson. My pay for the night was a copy of the DVD, which I think is still unreleased, so it was well worth it. Also, getting to play my FAVORITE music that night to an attentive people was a blast.
Coming off the high of seeing the recently reunited Gray at The New Museum last week, this is is the icing on the cake.
If you are a fan of the original No Wave/Post Punk/Hip Hop scene that came from the streets of Downtown NYC, then you MUST see this film. Narrated by Debbie Harry + a ton of original super 8 footage shot by Gray’s Michael Holman gives us a new look into one of the most original times in musical/artistic history.

Sal Principato (Liquid Liquid) + Johnny Dynell will be performing after the screening. Thanks to Remezcla, New York International Latino Film Festival, and everyone involved for bringing the film back to NY.
