Moovmnt: The Future Of Funk

Recommended Listening / DJ Mix

WHOA. Shout out to Miles Bonny for this one. Moovmnt went ahead and put together a pretty solid semi definitive mix of modern funk that is super slamming. Lots of familiar names and a hand full of exclusives that just bring the Summer back again and again.

The soundcloud file is already maxed out, but there is a direct link + tracklist on the page.

Night Fever Vol XII: The Boogie Edition

Austin Night Life / Upcoming Shows

I am returning to Austin this weekend for a nice little line up of fun parties. The first thing to jump off is this Friday at Copa (on Congress btwn 2nd & 3rd).

This is the 12th edition of Night Fever (@thenightfever) the famed Wax Poetics Magazine headed monthly party that features the best Soul, Funk, Disco DJs + bands from across the country bringing you serious heat. This time around they are bringing the homie Kon (@Kon1200) of Kon & Amir down for a serious Boogie set. Knowing that Boogie is my shit I was asked to open, and since I was gonna be in town I figured lezz go.

I haven’t done a full Boogie/Disco set in some time, so I really looking forward to this!

Here if the Facebook invite for more information. You must learn.

Frank 151 Radio Episode 5: Dam-Funk interview + Prince Klassen mix

Recommended Listening / DJ Mix / Future Soul

Well with the new year comes a new mix from myself that I did for Frank 151 Radio A LONG TIME AGO (in internet years). The newest episode turns it’s focus to the future of soul + funk music, LA’s Dam-Funk. I am sure most of you have heard him by now, but if you haven’t just imagine Kashif, Zapp, and Prince having a baby.

I have been waiting and waiting to get this mix posted and the timing actually could not have been any better. My portion of the mix consists of newer boogie / beats stuff that I am really feeling. Mike Slott, Onra, Reggie B, Jneiro Jarel and so on.

So with that said, you can head over to Frank and watch a clip of host Jasmine Solano’s interview with Dam and download the mix. Thanks to Synapse for having me on the show and big shout out to brother Dam for bringing the boogie sound further into the light it deserves (just don’t make the record prices skyrocket!).

Madlib Medicine Show No 10, Black Soul

Recommended Listening / DJ Mix / Disco

Late last year, the Stones Throw camp announced Madlib will be releasing something every month for the year 2010. This seemed like an impossible feat, but knowing Madlib, I am sure he can do that for 5 years and not miss a beat.

This CD is the most recent, and it hits close to home. The mix consists of Disco & Boogie almost exclusively with a little bit of 70s modern soul that didn’t really fall into either category. He opens the mix with One Way’s “I Didn’t Mean To Break Your Heart” and that sets the tone of super soulful tune after tune. Nothing weirdo beardo, just great soul music. I have never heard anyone else play that song before, so getting the validation of knowing the time is such a good feeling.

Available at Turntable Lab.

Gazeebo for Pollo Erotico

Recommended Listening / DJ Mix

I am sure some of you are familiar with Gazeebo. With their classic re-edits and quality selection, it is hard to beat.

This new mix for Pollo Erotico is full of exclusive re-edits + great vibes all the way around. Midtempo stompers & spacey textures that are all soulful as can be.

The System - You’re In My System (Kerri Chandler Remix)

Classic Classic Classic house remix of one of my favorite boogie/ electro funk tunes ever.

Wax Poetics Japan X Beams Records: Brad Howe Exhibition

Walking around Harajuku with the homie Pase showing me a ton of new places I hadn’t seen, he told me about Beams Records. They offer the best hand picked items in the musical realm, ranging from Bossa Nova re-issues to exclusive CDs from Japanese Funk DJs.
When we walked in they had a great display of Wax Poetics Japan and many works from Brad Howe on display. I didn’t realize it was an exhibition until one item caught my eye. The store teamed up with WPJP, Howe, & PROPS radio to release an exclusive mixtape packaged with about 30 mini prints of Howe’s illustrations nicely packaged with a piece of candy. The show titled GRATITUDE ran until this past Sunday the 15th and I am glad I had the random chance of seeing it.
I initially picked up the package giving it minor attention until I realized that the mixtape included was actually from Wax Poetics contributor Amir of Boston’s DJ duo Kon & Amir. I then looked closer to notice it was a live set from Kon & Amir recorded at my extended SF family’s Sweater Funk party. Needless to say, I immediately copped it.
You can view more photos of the package on Howe’s blog linked above and I am working on finding a link so you can possibly order one for yourself.
