Separate Ways

Depeche Mode: Master + Servant

Anyone that knows me super well knows that Depeche Mode is more than likely my favorite band of all time. Lately, I have been picking up any 12”, but mostly 45s of their singles.
Two factors come into play that makes these amazing. One, the remixes and b-sides. Two, the incredible design work put into every release.

Depeche Mode: Design + Art Direction by Heath Killen

Recommended Reading / Design

When revisiting one of my favorite bands of all time, Depeche Mode, I always find something new to learn about them. Recently my thoughts were of their earlier works and the art direction that was involved to create such memorable album covers that helped with their branding and style direction.

Heath Killen, a magnificent designer/illustrator in his own right, took an amazing in depth look into Depeche Mode’s work discussing each album cover. His coverage also sees the work split into two sections. The first being 1981-1987 when Brian Griffin and Martyn Atkins were collectively producing the ground work for their constantly developing sound and style. With the second being 1990-2008 that saw famed photographer / creative ambassador Anton Corbijn take the reigns and further develop the look for Depeche Mode.

I greatly appreciate the work Heath Killen put into this for all to see. Can someone do this for their 45 singles now please?!?!?!!? Talk amazing work.

SOUTHERN VIOLATOR: Depeche Mode VS Ludacris

This is it! The time has come. While we have been having fun throwing these wacky pairings together for you for over a year now, it’s time to say goodbye. This is the last VS party and we are closing it out with a banger. I have been trying to throw Depeche Mode in there for so long and now we got fast fashion versus southern hospitality.

As usual yours truly and DJ Orion will be playing all your favorite songs mixed, mashed, and everything in between. Of course it won’t be all DM and Luda all night, we will be throwing in their peers and influences to cover all the bases.

Expect to hear 80’s classics and southern rap anthems.

Thanks to Greg Ackerman (@g_ack) & writer Rebecca Chulew (@Germanfrancie) for the great article and reminder of Gahan’s birthday!

What a pleasant read and listen this was.

All I have to say is, Gahan turning 49, covers Joy Division, and Alan Wilder breaks down 13 of his favorite records of all time. MASSIVE!
