Delancey Music Service: Tribute To MCA

Recommended Listening / Tribute

Stretch Armstrong & Eli Escobar pay a fitting tribute to the recently deceased MCA of Beastie Boys.

A sad day indeed, but let’s remember the good times.

Sam Tiba: Jersey Club Vol. 3 (Pelican Fly)

Recommended Listening / DJ Mixtape

Club Cheval’s Sam Tiba just made my day. A solid Jersey Club mixtape… just one question though, no DJ Lil Man?!?!

Though the mix is barely creeping past the 30 minute mark, there is a vagillion tracks on here.

MOTW: Keyboard Kid

Recommended Listening / DJ Mixtape

So far the best genre names I have ever heard are Power Violence, No Wave, and now Cloud Rap can be added to the list of silly names that definitely seem to fit the music they adhere to. Seattle’s Keyboard Kid gives us a dose of the mostly lo-fi world that has become the next movement in rap music. The names, look, and feel make me recall the cyber world of a young Angelina Jolie in Hackers. Cool looking cyber punks with laptops that project the screen image onto your face with outstanding refresh rates… only I don’t think they thought it would be so trill. I’m with it… for the most part. I just like when weird rappers really were weird and not a product of the internet. Exciting times!

WC Kids So Vane

Ever since I met these dudes I have fully cosigned their work. WC Kids come with a mixtape that’s made for the trap, but PH balanced for the club.

Glimmering Fractions Mix 02: Amethyst

Wow, upon further inspection into the wonderful world of Soundcloud, I came upon a new widget I have never seen before. I do believe I will be posting mixes I love in this format from here on out.

Moovmnt recently posted their second in the very soulful Glimmering Fractions mix series. I love that Amsterdam is basically the mecca of future soul. I definitely need to give them a visit in the near future.

Raphael Saadiq, Musiq, Common, Floating Points, Devonwho + many more make up the greatness for your earholes.

Green Giant: Down With The King

Recommended Listening / DJ Mixtape

Green Giant comes with a ripper of a mixtape in honor of Gasface’s (@kungfoutre) current project Lookin’ 4 Galt. A film showing their journey to find mysterious composer Galt MacDermot that has supposedly relocated to New York, yet seldom if ever seen. Gasface are true New York ambassadors via France and I hope to kick it next time they are roaming the NY streets.

To download the mixtape, you must learn.

Murlo: Bombcast Mixtape

Recommended Listening / DJ Mixtape

Good lord Murlo is maybe one of my top 5 favorite producers right now. Future Riddims. The opening songs are completely where it’s at for me, not to take away from the great Dancehall artists that make up the remainder of the mix.

Glasgow’s Slow It Down Music is ringing in the new year with a new guest mix series for their website with Brooklyn’s own Munga. Bunch of slow burners on here, just the way I like it. Boogie, Edits, and Grooves for the sophisticated listener.

Strut x Trevor Jackson present: Metal Dance - Industrial, Post Punk, EBM Classics & Rarities 80-88

Former Output Recordings man behind the curtain, Trevor Jackson, was hired to curate the latest Strut compilation to be out soon entitled, Metal Dance. The compilation is of Jackson’s favorite Industrial, Post Punk, EBM tunes when things were still funky. I always found it interesting that a lot of early Industrial was more Hip Hop / Funk based than people would think. Listen to Ministry’s “Work For Love” as an example or give A Certain Ratio a spin and hear some of the funkiest un Funk music ever.

Though Jackson digs a little deeper than my two examples, I use them as really strong ideas of what was going on in the hybrid sound coming out of the early 80’s.

As a special bonus Jackson put together a mini mix of the upcoming release.
