Director / Producer Farid Slimani was just 19 years old when most of the footage was shot in the mid 90’s during his first trip to New York City. His interest in the club scene introduced him to all the right people meaning Masters At Work, Francois K, Junior Vasquez + many others. Though the footage was shelved for 15 years, Slimani picked up where he left off and completed the project.
I feel lucky to have been exposed to this music in the mid-late 90’s when I started DJing at the age of 14. It changed my life and continues to do so in many ways. Though I venture into other realms of music often, without shame mind you, I always come back to my roots. I can’t think my brother and my DJ mentors enough for exposing me to such a great period in House music.
I always say my favorite time in musical history would have to be the New York Downtown / No Wave scene in the late 70’s- early 80’s, and if a time machine were to get created it would be the first place I would go. Coming back to this thought makes me think that I would just stick around in New York and live my life here throughout the late 90’s and leave in 2000. How amazing an idea.
