Giant Robot Podcast: Heisuke Kitazawa

Recommended Listening / Artist Interview
Giant Robot’s Eric Nakamura interviews Japanese illustrator Heisuke Kitazawa aka PCP for his current show at GR2 in Los Angeles.
For those in LA area, the show is running through August 24th at GR2.
Pretty fun personal look into Kitazawa’s life. You must learn.
Yamauchi Michio
Great work from Japanese street photographer similar to Moriyama Daido in content, definitely not as perverse, but offers another side to Japan.

Sugimoto Hiroshi for Villa Manin
Last week I showed you some of my favorite photos from Japanese artist, Sugimoto Hiroshi. His work is a new favorite of mine and this mini documentary from Villa Manin gives a closer look at Sugimoto sensei’s life and thoughts. The video is made up of two short parts, but you get a great glimpse of his ongoing career.
I would love to sit in at his studio to shoot some photos and learn more about his life.

New People Online Channel

Recommended Watching / Japanese Arts
I am not entirely too sure when San Francisco’s New People launched their online channel, but genius comes to mind as to whom ever thought of it. I own a couple of these titles on DVD, but to be able to watch the other lesser wanted/needed in the series for 3 dollars a go is great. There is also a Yoshitomo Nara video available in the series, but for some reason is missing from the online channel.
Regardless of what is missing, just know these are great in-depth looks into these artists lives that serves as amazing documentation of 21st century art.
You can also purchase these DVDs via their location in SF’s Japantown or Amazon.

KENZO MINAMI x ACE HOTEL JAPAN RELIEF T SHIRT
NYC-based artist Kenzo Minami is an old friend, and has painted in the rooms of Ace Hotel Portland and NYC. He’s created a custom shirt for our online shop to raise money for relief efforts in Japan - 100% of proceeds will be donated to the Real Medicine Foundation. Here’s what the shirt’s about, in Kenzo’s words:
It is about ‘Re:’ in terms of ‘Reply’ - our reply to the tsunami and our response to Japan (which is this charity itself and collectively to help the world and give on a larger scale). Also, Japan will need a lot of ‘Re____’ from now on: ‘Rebuild,’ ‘Restart,’ ‘Reboot,’ ’Recharge’ and more.
The limited edition shirt is now up on our online shop, and is also available for purchase at all Ace Hotels and at select Rudy’s Barbershop locations.

Digital Harinezumi 2+++

WANT!!!
The newest version of Superheadz Digital Harinezumi, the 2+++, that is TRIPLE PLUS has finally hit the shelves and I got a first hand look at it the other day at The Lab. I have wanted one of these for so long now, but they keep updating them I don’t know which to get!
This new version has 10 color modes to shoot in, which is a huge upgrade from the last few versions. The principle goal of the camera is to mock super 8mm looks, which I think they succeed in coming close.
To read more about the new version + watch video with new functions, you must learn.
