    Now that hurricane Irene has come and gone with a lot less damage as expected thankfully, we can enjoy our beautiful city of New York once again. Monday had to have been one of the most beautiful days in recent memory and I hope this weather sticks.

    Though I am anxiously awaiting the return of Fall, I know my Texas familia is definitely still scorching hot with just ridiculous temps for the better part of the year.

    Hopefully this cools you down, or at least takes your mind off things.

    Martin Perna, founder of Antibalas and most recently Ocote Soul Sounds, graces us with a lovely mix of Summertime cool breezes. My man knows his stuff and just in case you didn’t know the other half of Ocote recently won a Grammy. Take that gringos.

    Latinos in Art / Art News

    Carlos Donjuan has been making a name for himself in the Latino / Texas art scene in the last few years. His work is hanging inside of Cheech Marin’s collection and has been shown in many of Texas’ finer galleries. 

    His background is in street/graffiti art and has been creatively adhering his name to walls with and without permission for 14 years now. He represents the Sour Grapes crew, which I was asked to be apart of 2 years ago and still rep it when the opportunity arises.

  • Man FM 008: 3Ball MTY + Toy Selektah

    Man Recordings recently posted their newest podcast for Man FM that features the boys from DOWN south 3Ball MTY + Toy Selektah. 3Ball MTY are at the front of the newest sub genre of bass music coming from Mexico and the very cool thing is they are just in their teens.

    Tribal Guarachero is a blend of regional Mexican sounds with House, Techno and Electro. I am very excited to hear what comes from this somewhat new sound and scene. Latinos in dance music is always something to be proud of.

  • The Mexican American Orquesta by Manuel Peña “Peña traces the evolution of the orquesta in the Southwest from its beginnings in the nineteenth century through its pinnacle in the 1970s and its decline since the 1980s.” I picked this book up at the super Half Price Books in Dallas for $1.00. This looks to be a great read covering an untold history of Mexican American music that was born out of necessity due to class conflict and the blending of modern with traditional. Peña has taught Anthropology at The University of Texas, Austin as well as Music at The California State University,  Fresno.
