I once had a pretty long conversation with Peanut Butter Wolf about the future of Stones Throw. The conversation gave an interesting look into how he felt about the current state of things and his personal wants for the roster. I would say throughout the years tastes have changed, risks have been taken, and fans have been lost. Starting as a predominantly Hip Hop label, it was quick to gain a fan base of diehards that ultimately were a little too real for their own good. Sure, I love Hip Hop. However, you can’t survive on Dilla & Madlib releases exclusively.
I have always had a strong connection with Stones Throw and I like to imagine the world is working as it should in a cosmic sense of mentally be on the same page, but all through the subconscious. While they were releasing Heavy Funk related comps, I was looks for Boogie. While they were putting out Boogie, I was looking for Post-Punk. While they were releasing Post-Punk & Minimal Wave we met in the middle. Each release holding a closer connection than the last until we ultimately caught up with each other.
Vex Ruffin being the newest signing to the label, it just makes sense. No, they aren’t killing the rap game… They probably won’t be killing many games. However they make up the physical amalgamation of what Stones Throw has been offering us for years. Equal parts Captain Funkaho, Koushik, Minimal Wave, James Pants, and Beats. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but though each artist is different there really is a Stones Throw sound and this is proof.

Funk For First Time Fathers
Egon of Now-Again/ Stones Throw Records has kept DJs and collectors on their toes for years now. Uncovering dusty gems that we didn’t know we wanted to hear and making most of his packaging look so good we buy things we didn’t know we wanted to buy.
His on going series featured on NPR, Funk Archaeology, gives us a look into what his current tastes are leaning on or recent finds on far away travels. Such a lucky guy that knows his shit.
I was just discussing today how weird it feels to see my childhood friends posting photos of their children going off on their first day of school on bookface. I can vaguely remember my first day of school and to see some people I met my first day of school having their own children and keeping the circle going, it is kind of a brain melter.
With that said, it seems like a handful of friends that came into my life post school are having babies of their own. I roll with a bunch of music nerds, it should be no surprise and this post is for them.
Egon recently had a child and his latest Funk Archaeology explores the music he has found to stimulate his baby boy. Though it doesn’t have to be as weird as Indonesian Psych, music creates a different world for children just as it does for us “adults”.
Shout out to both XXXchange and P-Love for having awesome babies.

Their 2011 release line up is looking so far out and I can’t wait for all the full lengths to drop. Lots of great Boogie, Post Punk, and Hip Hop on the roster and in the mix.

Frank 151 Radio Episode 5: Dam-Funk interview + Prince Klassen mix

Well with the new year comes a new mix from myself that I did for Frank 151 Radio A LONG TIME AGO (in internet years). The newest episode turns it’s focus to the future of soul + funk music, LA’s Dam-Funk. I am sure most of you have heard him by now, but if you haven’t just imagine Kashif, Zapp, and Prince having a baby.
I have been waiting and waiting to get this mix posted and the timing actually could not have been any better. My portion of the mix consists of newer boogie / beats stuff that I am really feeling. Mike Slott, Onra, Reggie B, Jneiro Jarel and so on.

It seems like a lot of people are turning their attention towards Southeast Asia as of late, and I don’t blame them at all. Over the last few years there have been a grip of great compilations released by labels such as Sublime Frequencies, that have focused on anything from regional folk music of Vietnam to psychedelic pop rock of Iraq. The Cambodian Rocks series played a heavy party in introducing a lot of this music to the West as well.
Grabbing whatever I can get my hands on, I am glad to see the attention coming from those that will dig a little deeper and find the funkier side of things, not to say there wasn’t already coincidental “funk” pieces on these comps. Mike 2600 + yours truly released a mixtape last year focusing on all things SE Asian. You can download that here, with all donations going towards the Cambodian youth outreach program, Tiny Toones.
Now with that said, Egon of the Stones Throw / Now Again labels has continued his on going NPR series “Funk Archaeology” with a closer examination of the southerer/easterer island system of Indonesia. In the feature there are 5 great choices that lean towards the funkier/psych side of things. There is also minor talk of a new compilation, Those Shocking Shaking Days, coming out early 2011. Super excited to hear that and I hope you enjoy this.

Madlib Medicine Show No 10, Black Soul

Late last year, the Stones Throw camp announced Madlib will be releasing something every month for the year 2010. This seemed like an impossible feat, but knowing Madlib, I am sure he can do that for 5 years and not miss a beat.
This CD is the most recent, and it hits close to home. The mix consists of Disco & Boogie almost exclusively with a little bit of 70s modern soul that didn’t really fall into either category. He opens the mix with One Way’s “I Didn’t Mean To Break Your Heart” and that sets the tone of super soulful tune after tune. Nothing weirdo beardo, just great soul music. I have never heard anyone else play that song before, so getting the validation of knowing the time is such a good feeling.
